Drukpa Kunle (1455–1529; ’brug pa kun legs) was a Tibetan yogin, poet and teacher of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition. Born into the Gya family of Ralung, he received a thorough religious education, including instruction from leading masters of his lineage, before returning his monastic vows and taking up the life of a wandering practitioner. Travelling widely through Tibet and Bhutan, he became celebrated for songs, stories and startling encounters that employed humour, irreverence and social criticism to reveal the Dharma beyond outward conformity. In Bhutan, where he remains a much-loved religious figure, later tradition associates him with sacred sites, rituals of fertility and protection, and the familiar image of the ‘mad yogin’, whose apparently unruly conduct points towards a freedom from hypocrisy and fixed ideas.
